What is Beech Veneer?

Beech (beech) is widely distributed in Asia, Europe and North America, and is one of the main tree species in temperate broadleaf deciduous forests.

The wood color of European beech is typically cream, sometimes pink or brown. Because the logs need to be cooked before being planed, the bark will be darker.

Beech has straight texture end, delicate and uniform myostructure, good wood gloss, and significant wide wood rays, especially on the longitudinal section; Sawing logs are often layered with distinct dark stripes or markings on a light background.

Beech not only has the beauty and temperament of natural trees, but also has solid material, stable production and affordable price. It is undoubtedly one of the first choices for all families who love wood style. Especially suitable for the production of decorative natural veneer and coating board, widely used in furniture, flooring, Musical Instruments, plywood, children's toys, sporting goods, tool handles and so on

European beech is divided into red beech and white beech. The two are the same kind of wood before drying, but the difference is that the beech has a steam fumigation process when drying, while the white beech does not. Therefore, the English name of red BEECH is STEAMED BEECH(meaning "Zelech fumigated by steam").

White BEECH was UNSTEAMED BEECH(meaning 'zelkova not fumigated by steam'). The freshly cut white beech is white, but after a period of oxidation it becomes a lighter pink. The length of steam fumigation determines the shade of red of the beech

Thats' why many countries clients choose use beech wood to peel beech veneer, because it can as the material to make plywood board and wooden furniture and other panels. 

Then if you have beech wood, how to produce the beech veneer? what machines are required? and what's the production flow?

Usually, natural veneer sheets is processed by peeling. The process flow is as follows:

Logs(Raw material)→Cutting(to the required log length)→Softening (steaming or boiling to make the log easy to peel)→Debarking→Peeling→Drying.

Now let's talk step by step:

1. Logs

This no need say to much, you have to have the materials, then you can start production. according to local resource and market demands, different clients will use different wood, the most commonly wood are poplar, beech, birch, pine, and others. Today we say the beech wood and beech veneer. Some clients will plant tree by themslves, thus will reach sustainable development.

2. Cutting

After the beech log enters your factory, First it will be cutted into wood segments according to the required length, Commonly the log will be cutted like 1300mm, 2600mm, to suitable for making plywood board. For the log diameter, by the spindleless peeling machine, usually the max log diameter will be less than 550mm. 

The reasonable plan not only has a high yield, but also produces more veneers in radial cuts and less veneers in string cuts, and the obtained products have high decorative value. Logs of different diameter grades require different sawing schemes. The thick solid line in the figure is the saw section line, and the direction of the arrow is the cutting direction of the planer:

3. Softening

Usually for some hardwood, some clients will first choose to boiling them, to make the wood soft, thus will be more helpful for the peeling step and produce good quality veneers. After the wood is cooked (ie, hydrothermally treated), The most effective way to improve the wood usage is to adjust the two factors of temperature and moisture content at the same time, that is, to increase the temperature of the wood and increase the moisture content of the wood at the same time. This is the reason why the wood is usually cooked with saturated steam or hot water in actual production—hydrothermal treatment.

First of all, when the wood cube is put into the cooking tank, it should be carried out according to the tree species and the wood cube specification; it is best to keep the water temperature at room temperature and raise the temperature slowly to avoid the cracking of the wood cube due to thermal stress. When the temperature rises to above 40°C, the heating rate should be slowed down; excessive cooking will also reduce the quality of veneer; the cooking tank should often remove resin, bark, and sediment, and change the water frequently to reduce wood pollution; after cooking The wood should be placed in the warm water tank for wood storage in front of the slicer in time, and the heat preservation should be in the range of 40~50 °C (depending on the tree species and the thickness of the veneer). The table below lists cooking benchmarks for several types of wood for reference only. 

4. Debarking

Before start peeling, usually will first debarking wood bark by the debarking machine, many people call it be log debarker or wood debarker. This machine mainly for remove wood bark through rotate. After this step, the wood will without bark, thus will be more better for the next step-peeling. Because the wood bark may have small stone, gravel or nails, this will easy to damage the peeling knife of peeling machine. 

5. Peeling

After debarking, the wood without bark will be conveyed to veneer peeling machine, this machine mainly for peel pieces of wood veneer sheets also be called piles, through rollers rotary. For the Spindleless veneer peeling machine, its standard size has two types, they are 4feet and 8feet, which can peel max log length 1400mm and 2600mm, and max log diameter 500mm and 600mm. 

For the beech wood, it required the peeling machine are strong enough, because beech wood are hardwood. So the spindleless peeling machine need be more strong and powerful. According to the required veneer thickness and size, through set up data from the screen, veneer lathe will produce the veneer you want. For example, if you need veneer thickness 1.5mm, size 1270*800mm, then just input these data on the screen, the end veneer size and thickness will same as this. 

Good quality veneer sheets, will be very helpful for your business, whatever you sell veneer to other factory, or you will produce plywood or furniture or others by yourself, veneer quality will be directly related with the end product quality. 

6. Drying

the original humidity of peeled veneer are very big, different wood species are different, some humidity can reach 80%, some 60-70%, this are not suitable for making other products, and also sell low price if directly sell.

So it need the drying line to drying the abundant moisture of veneer, so the veneer dryer are required, now in the market, there are mainly these veneer dryer: roller dryer, mesh dryer, and press dryer. They have their own advantages.

The moisture content after drying is generally required to be 8% to 12%, some clients will drying the end moisture of veneer be 5%. 

For the drying line like roller dryer, mesh dryer, they can be different sections, width and floors to satisfy different clients drying capacity. For example, some clients require drying capacity reach 100m3 per day, some require 70m3 per day, some require30-40% per day. We will produce the drying according to each clients own conditions and requires.
