Particle board (PB), Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) are three common wood based boards, which differ in raw materials, manufacturing processes, performance and applications. Here are their detailed differences:
1. Raw materials
- Particleboard: Made of fine wood chips such as wood chips and sawdust, pressed by adhesive.
- Oriented Strand Board: Made of larger and directional wood chips, usually in long strips, pressed by adhesive.
- Medium Density Board: Made of wood fibers, pressed by adhesive, with fine and uniform fibers.
2. Manufacturing process
- Particleboard: Mix wood chips with adhesive and heat press them into shape.
- Oriented Strand Board: After the wood chips are arranged in a directional manner, they are heat pressed into shape, usually in a multi-layer structure.
- Medium Density Board: Mix wood fibers with adhesive and heat press them into shape, with a smooth surface.
3. Physical properties
- Particleboard:
- Low density, average strength.
- Rough surface, not easy to directly fine-process.
- Strong hygroscopicity, easy to deform due to moisture.
- Oriented Strand Board:
- High density, high strength, especially lateral strength.
- Rough surface, but stable structure, good moisture resistance.
- Suitable for load-bearing structures, often used in construction and packaging.
- Medium Density Fiberboard:
- High density, high strength, smooth surface.
- Easy to process, suitable for fine carving and surface treatment.
- Strong hygroscopicity, but moisture resistance can be improved through treatment.
4. Application areas
- Particleboard:
- Commonly used in non-load-bearing structures such as furniture, cabinets, partitions, etc.
- Suitable for occasions that require economy and affordability.
- Oriented Strand Board:
- Commonly used in load-bearing structures such as building walls, floors, roofs, etc.
- Also used for packaging boxes and pallets, etc.
- Medium Density Fiberboard:
- Commonly used in high-end furniture, door panels, decorative lines, etc.
- Suitable for occasions that require fine processing and surface treatment.
5. Advantages and Disadvantages
- Particleboard:
- Advantages: low cost and easy to produce.
- Disadvantages: low strength, easy to get wet, rough surface.
- Oriented Strand Board:
- Advantages: high strength, good moisture resistance, stable structure.
- Disadvantages: rough surface, not easy to fine process.
- Medium Density Fiberboard:
- Advantages: smooth surface, easy to process, high strength.
- Disadvantages: high cost and strong hygroscopicity.
