Comparison and Analysis of Common Plywood Grinding Processes


1. Double-Sided Sanding Machine vs. Single-Sided Sanding Machine

  Conventional single-sided fixed-thickness sanding machines, including upper sanding frame and lower sanding frame types, process one side of a board as a reference surface to grind the other side to a fixed thickness. The final thickness accuracy of the boards depends on the quality of the reference surface and the precision of the processing equipment itself. Factors such as material, substrate thickness, and processing temperature can lead to processing deviations. In this case, using the same single-sided fixed-thickness sanding machine, if there are variable factors in the boards before processing, the resulting products will have certain errors in both thickness dimensions and surface smoothness. To minimize errors, parameters need constant adjustment and repeated fine-tuning. Even if the errors are eventually controlled within the standard range, a considerable amount of time will be wasted, unable to meet the requirements of batch production and efficient processing of plywood.


  In contrast, double-sided fixed-thickness sanding machines adopt a mode of pairing upper and lower sanding frames, with contact sticks connecting between the upper and lower sanding frames to ensure their coordinated operation. By adjusting the distance between the "upper sanding frame-contact wheel" and "lower sanding frame-contact wheel," the thickness of the boards can be controlled. Setting both distance parameters to the same value ensures consistency in board thickness dimensions and automatic error adjustment. Moreover, the metal fixed-thickness sanding wheel has high rigidity and is not easily deformed. If the thickness of the incoming material is uneven, after passing through the sanding wheel, grinding and pressing can be employed to ensure consistent overall board thickness. Compared to single-sided sanding machines, choosing a double-sided sanding machine can accelerate the processing speed of plywood.


2. Double-Sided Sanding Machine vs. Four-Sided Sanding Machine

  With increasingly stringent requirements for plywood quality in various industries, various types of equipment for processing plywood are constantly being updated and upgraded. Regarding sanding machines, from the initial single-stage fixed-thickness sanding machine to subsequent three-stage and four-stage fixed-thickness sanding machines, the four-stage double-sided sanding machine is currently the most mature in technology and stable in processing performance. Although it has further improved processing accuracy compared to mainstream double-sided sanding machines, its large installation capacity also leads to an increase in the cost of processing a single board. For enterprises requiring large-scale plywood production, the difference in operating costs between these two types of sanding machines is significant. For example, a double-sided four-sanding-frame sanding machine has a total installed capacity of up to 350 kW for itself and its supporting systems. If operated in double shifts every day, with a power factor of 0.8, the daily power consumption can reach 7000 kWh. The feed speed of the sanding machine can reach 24m/min to 35m/min, with enormous production capacity, but most of the production capacity is wasted when matched with existing small and medium-sized plywood production lines.


  In contrast, while ensuring that processing accuracy meets requirements, the use of double-sided sanding machines can effectively reduce costs due to their lower installed capacity. The commonly used double-sided sanding machines in enterprises usually have an installed capacity of around 160 kW. If operated in double shifts every day, the daily power consumption is 3200 kWh, reducing costs by more than half. Therefore, for some small and medium-sized plywood processing enterprises, choosing suitable processing equipment can often create greater benefits.
